How to Fix A Discord Screen Share With No Audio

While Discord is a popular and powerful VoIP based software for sharing audio, video, and text messages with users, those who want to use its screen sharing functionality may find audio carry over to be a bit tricky. Whether you are trying to screen share with buddies in a game or live stream on Twitch or YouTube, the screen share no audio issue is frustrating to say the least. Discord is aware of the issue but has only provided a fix for those who have audio issues when screen sharing internet browsers, which can be seen here. So, for those who have this bug but have it with applications too, we have 10 fixes for you. 

What Causes No Audio During a Discord Screen Share Session?

There are several reasons behind why you get a Discord screen share and no audio, whether it is corrupted data messing with your files, bad audio drivers, or an out of date Discord, every computer configuration is different. Here are the top 6 causes of the Discord screen share no audio bug: 

• You have bad audio drivers installed that are either corrupted or not functioning properly with Discord,
• You have not given Discord elevated access (admin privileges) to share your full screen remotely with another user,
• If using a browser, the audio capture sometimes fails,
• The application you are using in conjunction with Discord is not compatible,
• The audio feature is encountering a bug or known issue and has lost stability.
• Discord is out of date.

With so many culprits behind why a Discord screen share session might have no audio, chances are you will need to try out several different fixes in order to narrow down the exact issue and solve it. To troubleshoot the problem, here are 10 fixes to use.

10 Fixes to Solve the Discord Screen Share With No Audio

Before you jump right into the methods below, close down Discord and restart your computer first. If there is any temporary corrupt data, restarting your computer will refresh the operating system and remove it. Temporary corrupt data can be anything from an open application that is malfunctioning to poor audio drivers. So, restarting the computer is a great way to ensure that it isn’t something that a quick refresh will fix.

1. Give Discord Administrator Privileges or Elevated Access.

One of the easiest ways to fix the issue is by giving Discord elevated access or administrator privileges. This will allow Discord to use features and resources that it could not access before. 

1. Either press Windows + E and find Discord in your file explorer or right-click on the desktop shortcut.
2. Once you have located Discord on your computer, right-click on the executable (or the shortcut) and choose properties from the menu.
3. Next, click on the compatibility tab at the top of the window.
4. Near the bottom of the window, you should see the option to “run as administrator”. Check this option.
5. Apply the changes, hit okay, and exit the windows. 

2. Add Your Game as an Activity to Prompt Audio.

Typically, when you start a game up or begin an activity, Discord will automatically detect the activity you are performing and list it. When Discord does not automatically detect the activity during a screen sharing session, the audio will not be pulled over and shared. Here is how to add an activity to prompt the audio carry over.

1. Launch Discord like you would normally.
2. Head to the user settings, which is found beside your Discord username.

3. Find game activity in the left-hand side menu and click into it.
4. Click the small “Add It” text and add the application that is having issues sharing the audio properly during a screen share session.
5. Now double check to see if the screen share has no audio still.
6. If the problem persists, try enabling the game-overlay.

** When completing the steps above, do not have Discord in admin mode.

3. Reset Discord’s Voice Settings.

If your screen share audio was working previously and suddenly isn’t and you haven’t installed any new programs, try resetting the voice settings in Discord. 

1. Launch Discord on your computer.
2. Click on your user settings.
3. Find “voice & video” in the left-hand menu and click it.
4. Click the “reset voice settings” found near the end of the page.
5. Confirm the reset.
6. Close Discord down and relaunch.

Side note: make sure that your input volume slider under voice settings isn’t set too low, as this could be an easy culprit to miss.

4. Check Application Compatibility.

A common issue that comes up that causes a no audio screen share session is a lack of compatibility between Discord and the application you are using. The only way to really determine if this is the issue is if you have recently downloaded a third-party application and are now having no audio during the screen share session.  It is recommended that if this is what has happened, that you uninstall the third-party program or use an alternative.  To uninstall:

1. Open your control panel using your computer’s search.

2. Under programs, click “uninstall a program”.
3. Find the program in the list and click on it.
4. Then click uninstall – located beside organize.
5. Wait until it is done uninstalling and then restart your computer.
6. Relaunch Discord and see if the problem still persists.
7. If the problem persists, use an alternative option.

5. Stop Using Automatic Detection & Use Push to Talk.

If you have been relying on Discord to automatically detect audio activity, this may be the issue. Discord may not be able to detect the audio activity every single time and when it fails, you can use the push to talk instead.

1. Find your username, click the gear icon, and go into user settings.
2. Find the voice and video in the left-hand menu and click it.
3. Under the input mode, check the push to talk box.
4. Back in the left-hand menu, find keybinds and click it.
5. Add a keybind as a push to talk toggle.
6. Head back to voice and video settings, under push to talk, find the push to talk release delay and modify the time it takes to cut your voice signal.
7. Check to see if the screen share audio works.

6. Consider Using Windowed Mode Instead of Full Screen.

A unique bug prevents screen share and audio when the user’s application is in full-screen mode due to conflicting with Discord permissions. To see if this is what is causing the no audio, use the Windowed mode option in your game or application and adjust the sides of the program as needed. Once you have it running, try a Discord screen share session and see if there is audio carrying over. 

7. Reinstall Your Audio Drivers.

If your audio drivers are corrupted or out of date, they could be the cause of the problem. To reinstall your audio drivers, do the following.

1. Go to your device manager by pressing Windows + R.
2. In the run dialogue box, type in devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

3. Find the audio inputs and outputs section and expand it.
4. Find the sound hardware and right-click on it. Uninstall the device.
5. Right-click the sound hardware again and choose the scan for hardware changes.
6. Your computer will scan for hardware that isn’t installed and will find that your audio drivers aren’t available. The default drivers will then be automatically installed.
7. Restart your computer once the drivers are reinstalled.

If the issue continues to persist, see if your audio drivers have an update.

1. Go to your device manager by pressing Windows + R.
2. In the run dialogue box, type in devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
3. Find the audio inputs and outputs section and expand it.
4. Find the sound hardware and right-click it. This time, choose to update the driver.

Launch Discord and try a screen share session again to see if the no audio bug persists.

8. Clear Discord’s Roaming Data.

The Discord application will use roaming data and a cache to save your user preferences and temporary operations that are needed during a voice or video call. When the cache is corrupted, you may get a screen share with no audio. You can clear the cache or the roaming data to see if this is an issue. 

1. Close down Discord completely.
2. On your keyboard, press down the Windows key + R. This pops open the run dialogue box for commands.
3. Type in %appdata% on the command line. Hit okay or enter.
4. This will bring up the roaming folder for App Data.
5. Find Discord in the roaming folder.
6. Right-click on the Discord folder and delete it.
7. Restart your computer and launch Discord to see if the problem has been resolved.

9. Check Your Computer’s Audio Settings.

Make sure that your computer’s audio settings allow Discord access. 

1. Open your computer’s search box and type in “microphone privacy”.

2. In the second section, find the “allow apps to access your microphone” and make sure it is turned on.
3. Scroll down and find Discord in the list and enable access.
4. Save changes and exit the settings window.

10. Update Discord/Reinstall Discord

If none of the fixes above work, uninstall Discord through your control panel. Once it is uninstalled, restart your computer. When loaded back up, head over to the Discord website and reinstall the program and see if the screen share no audio bug persists.
